Traditional heating systems that use air currents to move warm air around a house can lead to higher moisture levels in the house than an underfloor heating system. A higher humidity inside of a house can promote the growth of microbes and parasites that are definitely not welcome in most households. Too much water in the air can make it easy for mould to grow in foods, and mildew to grow on towels or bathroom walls. Reducing the moisture in the air can also reduce dust mite populations. Asthma or other respiratory allergies can be more active with higher humidity levels, so people who suffer from these can benefit from an underfloor heating system.

Underfloor heating systems heat the house from the ground up, meaning that people who use an underfloor heating system to heat their house will never get cold feet, even if they walk around in their houses barefoot in winter. Cold feet is a simple part of life for most people who live in a cooler climate, but an underfloor heating system can allow people in those climates to walk barefoot without worrying about it. People who use an underfloor heating system have the luxury of stepping out of the shower onto a floor that is already pleasantly warm. Also, traditional air current style heating systems can be loud and obnoxious when they are running, whereas an underfloor heating system can be almost silent. Traditional heating systems can suddenly and loudly turn on when the temperature drops below a certain level, but people who use an underfloor heating system to heat their house will never be woken up in the middle of the night when their heater turns on.

In order to install an underfloor heating system, extensive excavation of the floor in a house is needed, so the initial installation can be rather pricy and time consuming, but once the system is in place, it requires very little maintenance and costs less to run than a traditional heating system. Because underfloor heating systems use less energy to keep the house at a comfortable temperature, they cost less to use, and therefore lead to a smaller heating bill. This difference between the cost of keeping an underfloor heating system running and the cost of using a traditional air current style heating system is usually enough that people who use an underfloor heating system pay off the extra costs within a few years. An underfloor heating system adds to the market value of a house, so you can still make the extra money you spent on installation costs back, even if you plan to sell your house in a few years.

In recent years, energy efficiency has been a driving point for environmentalists, and since underfloor heating systems are more energy efficient than traditional styles, they are more environmentally friendly. Even if the water used in an underfloor heating system is heated using electricity, it is still more energy efficient than other styles of electric heating, but underfloor heating systems can be even more environmentally friendly. Some styles of underfloor heating systems use geothermal or solar power to heat the water that goes through the floor. Electric heating is bad for the environment because the electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels, which release harmful gasses such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. With electrically heated underfloor heating systems, less electricity is used, so less fossil fuels need to be burned to produce the energy to heat the house, but with the geothermal or solar styles, there is truly no burning of fossil fuels involved in heating the home.

Traditional heating systems that use air currents to move hot air around the house give the warm air enough time to rise to the ceiling, resulting in a concentration of heat energy above where anyone in the house can benefit from it. For an air current style heating system to warm the people in the house, it not only has to heat the air at a level where people can feel it, but also the air in all levels above that. Because the warm air from an underfloor heating system rises directly from the floor in all rooms, it only has to rise upward, and since it cools as it rises, it doesn’t collect near the ceiling. Because the air current style of heating system heats both places where people can feel the warm air and places where they cannot, and underfloor heating systems only heat areas where people can benefit from the warm air, underfloor heating systems use less total heat energy to keep the house comfortable for the people living in it.

Underfloor heating systems consist of a long loop of tubing in an exaggerated S pattern underneath the floor of a house, which is also connected to a water heater. Water is heated at the heater, and then pumped around the house through the tubing. Heat energy is absorbed into the tubing from the water, and into the floor from the tubing. The floor then heats the air, which rises into the airspace of the room. Underfloor heating systems are distinct from traditional heating systems in that the more traditional styles heat the air in one room and use air currents to move the heat around. The following are five reasons why underfloor heating systems are worth installing in place of traditional heating systems.

Here is a video of the beginnings of an underfloor heating system installation:

Underfloor heating systems are superior to traditional styles in that they are more energy efficient, environmentally friendly, cost effective, comfortable, and healthy. The only possible reasons why someone would choose a traditional air current heating system over an underfloor heating system are because they have not yet been informed about the benefits of the latter, or because they simply cannot afford the initial costs of installing an underfloor heating system. This innovative approach to heating a house will definitely replace other methods in the future.
